In a time where family values have been placed on the back burner, I am firm in my beliefs that family is the most important thing. Honestly, the only one that you can rely on for sure is your family -- friends can desert you and leave you hanging, and love interests can break your heart into a million little pieces. Family can be compared to a rock in a river, never moving and always there. There are some times where the river overcomes the rock and the connection is lost, but the rock will always resurface.
Your family helps shape who you are as a person. If you've had traumatic experiences in your family, you're going to be scarred a little. If you've been showered with love and affection, you'll probably be a more compassionate person. Everyone needs to just sit down and have dinner with their family. People should just turn off the television and sit down with their family and get to know what's going on in each other's lives. Having strong family values gives you a firm foundation to stand on. Imagine standing on a small branch in the ocean -- you're going to fall into the ocean, obviously. Strong family values are like having a raft in the ocean -- strong and sturdy.
People in your family are also people that you can confide in. You can tell your best friend your deepest secret, only to have them spread it to the whole world. You can tell the same secret to your mom, and you can trust that she won't tell anyone (well... she shouldn't at least). I tell everything to my mom, and she listens. Most of my friends have a tendency to ask you about your problems for a few minutes, and then they start babbling about their own grievances instead of listening to you. Even though my brother can be an pompous jerk at times, I know that I can ask him for advice and I know that he won't judge me for whatever it is I'm doing -- robbing a bank maybe *innocent face*?
Friends come and go, but your family will always be there waiting. They'll catch you when you fall, and support you when you're trying to reach the stars. No matter what you do, it's impossible to get them off your tail because they unconditionally and unequivocally love you. So, the next time you guys meet for dinner, turn off the television and just get to know your family.
