We're fragile
Well, today, I tripped down a few stairs. I could have hit my head and had a concussion -- or I could have broken my neck and been paralyzed forever. Also, I could have broken my hip into a million pieces and require a plastic hip like those old people you see on the television. I think I've made my point -- humans are fragile. I mean, anything we do can cause us to die. When we're walking outside, what if a part of an airplane comes crashing down on you and squishes you? Or, what if a hawk accidentally drops a rock from a high altitude and strikes you in the head? What if you're walking around in New York City and someone drops a penny from a skyscraper? You could accidentally trip down a flight of stairs and well... die. One of your... big-boned teachers could fall on you, and you could die of a lack of oxygen. You could contract an airborne disease from one of your friends and die of a excruciating painful death. So, I was wondering... if we're so fragile, then why do we bother even going outside to live our lives? I mean, we're at constant risk of being squished by something, or we could trip and break a bone. For me, it's because life is too short to always live inside, wary of what may happen to you. Even if you go outside, and something happens to you, you'll at least have had a good life. I could go outside, be hit by an asteroid, and still be glad that I had lived a good life.This entry was posted on March 10, 2008 at 07:17 PM and is filed under Thoughts,.

Anything could happen at any moment. You could die inside, too. The way I think of it, there’s no safe place! :P

I agree with Kaylee! You could die inside watching TV from ... indecent exposure or something. Or you could get food poisoning! OR you could shut yourself in a closet playing hide and seek and never come out again! If there’s risk in absolutely everything, why not just take the risk and move on with life? After all, for all you know, your hip could break sitting on the sofa the entire time because the spring couldn’t hold.

Exactly! Why live inside, hiding from the world and fearing death, when death can come just as easily inside your home? You could die from a gas explosion if you have a gas stove. Or from the gas fumes in general. I don’t think it matters what you do, when your time comes, you really can’t avoid it. I think it’s best to live life to the fullest. At least you won’t have any regrets because you didn’t lead a sheltered life.

Nice to see a blog by someone who thinks about things (: I like that.
I think there is no safety. All life is many little sacrafices and many little risks. If we want to sit and do nothing to eliminate as much as possible as many risks as possible we wouldn’t have friends. & without friends my life is over. I know some people can survive alone without people but I am one who cannot. You can die inside outside anywhere at all. Your house could collaspe and kill you. Your dog could have a mutation and give you some new diseasey/cancerous thing. Who knows what could happen. So I think it’s about enjoying yourself. Humans are fragile. You see on TV how people can be cut open for surgery with a little knife just as easy as you cut open a chicken, fish or frog. I agree with Lucy. It’s best to take these risks and enjoy life then have a sheltered life and few memories, friends etc.
Sorry for the long comment.
Byes, Imi x

That’s a nice thought, Alex. But the fact is, the only way you CAN die, if by certain circumstances. For example, if you trip going down or up the stairs, it is really unlikely you’ll break your neck or get a concussion… Unless it’s a really tall stair case.
The human body is not fragile. It’s strong enough to survive for millions of years. If the body was as weak as you say, we’d have a uni-cell body.
You’re case is only for WEAKLINGs, such as yourself obviously because you’re blogging about it. Haha. Jk. :P But seriously, if someone would get paralyzed from tripping on stairs… that’s pretty sad. And if you break your neck, you’d probably die due to lack of oxygen through your throat.
Long comment short: Body isn’t weak. Take risks.

Hm.
Assume that a penny weighed 1 mg. The terminal velocity would be somewhere around .05 m/s.
(mass)*(velocity) = .05 mg m/s.
.05 x the time of impact.
we can assume that the penny won’t be at a complete stop on your head, so.
force = .05 newtons.
and thats.. nothing.
Just to make SURE .05 newtons can’t kill anyone, I checked http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/departments/nrd-51/BiomechanicsTrauma.html
It says about 50g of force on the head needed to kill someone, so:
50g = about 490 Newtons.
I might be wrong, so anyone, feel free to correct me. :mrgreen:

(response to Drawde): You can also watch that mythbusters episode on that.
It will only give you a minor cut.
