Earthquake!
Yesterday at around 8 PM, there was a magnitude 5.6 earthquake. The epicenter was a little south of where I live, so I felt it. It was actually the first _real_ earthquake that I've felt, ever. So, I was just sitting there, making thumbnails for the Photos page of my website when the shaking the started. At first, I thought it was my brother shaking the house somehow, but when I yelled at him to quit it, he replied with, 'I'm not doing anything!' Then, I realized that it was an earthquake. Though California is one of the most earthquake prone states, I sat there having an anxiety attack for about half of the earthquake's duration. Then, my dad started yelling at me to get outside, and when I went outside, I hit myself in the head, because I forgot my laptop! I paid half of my MacBook's price, so I might as well save it from the fate of being crushed in the event of a major earthquake (at that time, I didn't know that it was a 5.6). After about 5 minutes of standing outside in the cold, my dad thought it was safe to go back inside the house. When I opened the lid of my laptop again, I found myself swamped with instant messages, all centered around the topic if I was alive or not and if I had felt the earthquake. :???: The adrenaline that was pumping through my veins took about 10 minutes to go away. Earthquakes are interesting, yet terrifying. One would assume that since I live California, one of the most earthquake prone states, I wouldn't be as freaked out by this earthquake, but this recent earthquake has been the first 'powerful' earthquake since the Loma Prieta earthquake that struck on October 17, 1989 (it was a 6.9). So, does your family know what to do in the event of a natural disaster? *Edit*: At 3:54 PM, there was an aftershock earthquake that was a magnitude 3.7... and this is why they call California the 'earthquake state'. My reaction to the aftershock? 'Oh crap! Here we go again.' Then, I proceeded to hide beneath my desk. This entry was posted on October 31, 2007 at 03:46 PM and is filed under Personal,.

 I WAS WITH YOU AT THE TIME.
WOOT. It was so awesome!

I’ve never experienced an earthquake before, except for a mild tremor once. I didn’t really notice it, though.
I don’t think my area has many natural disasters, unless you count winter coldness as one!

Weee!
Fun fun, here we go again. You actually thought about your macbook over your own life.
How nice to have your priorities in order.
Drawde.

I remember there was an earthquake when I was in second grade, which means that you should have felt it, too….

Oh yeah, merry, i agree with you, I felt that one too :D, in 2nd grade. During the 5.6 one I was playing French horn…and i was like O__o so I was going to yell at my brother to stop shaking the whole house. Then when i opened my mouth, it shook harder  so i just sat there.

Wow… I’m glad you are OK! I’ve never experienced an earthquake before. I’m sure they must be terrifying. I don’t think we are very prone to earthquake, although that doesn’t mean we won’t have one when we least expect it. We are very susceptible to hurricanes though, terrible ones that destroy everything. Fortunately, when the worst hurricanes have past (during my lifetime) I lived in a safe concrete house in an area that didn’t flood. Now I live in a less-than-safe place and I don’t think anyone has an idea of what to do in case of an emergency :S

Your reaction to the earthquake (about your brother shaking the house) made me laugh. XD Sounds like something I’d say, lol.
Anyways, I’m glad to hear you’re doing just fine. :] I’ve only had one experience with earthquakes, at least that I was aware of, and it was back in either the 6th or 7th grade. I remember it because I had a huge 100-gallon aquarium in my room and the water was swishing really violently inside. >__>

Yeah, I remember I was just sitting there doing my math homework when everything started shaking…and then my five year-old brother started screaming “Earthquake!“ and we ran out of the house and it was freezing cold outside…..
btw: what happened to your cast of characters?
——-
Ack, scary much? I probably would’ve just curled up in a ball and cried :D Yeah, no earthquakes in Finland so YAY! Or any other type of major natural disasters…
——-
Glad to hear you’re okay. Hah, I’d forget I even had a laptop at a time like that. My thoughts would be swamped with “Oh my God.. earthquake… I’m going to die!“.
What’s happened with your header image? It’s a blank space of… black.

I find it amusing that you cared so much about your laptop…wouldn’t home owners insurance cover that? My step dad lives in Cali, near where the earthquake happened actually (I looked it up) and I’m freaked!!! No one has called to tell us he died so I’d assume he’s okay! I need to call him tomorrow!
PS I think everyone would have freaked out like you did so don’t feel so bad lol. It’s freaky…it’s like…we are a snow globe and God is shaking us up!!! Haha, only…its just California because you guys just drew the short straw I guess…it’s a beautiful state in everyother way though…I wanna live there someday! I’m glad that you are okay though! I would be freaked forever after that!

haha, my sister has lived in the san francisco bay area for about ten years now, and everytime i hear about an earthquake there i ask her how it was/how she’s doing - and she always misses it somehow! i think she just has problems… in this case, she said she was napping, lol. the last time there was a considerable earthquake, she said she didn’t feel anything while others said they did. so i really don’t know what she’s doing - next time there’s an earthquake, maybe you should hang out with her because she always seems to ignore them.
and nothing really ever happens here. like, no earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts…? so i guess in the event of any one of them, i would have no idea how to react.

I am originally from California (though currently living in Alabama), and back in 2000, I remember there being about six earthquakes. None were bad, mostly little tremors. They are quite a scary feeling. Glad to see that you are okay.
On a side note, the company I work for out here in Alabama, was part of a team to help get the internet back on in that area after the earthquake.
