Don't Underestimate Me
Have you ever had the feeling that some people just underestimate you? This has been happening a lot to me recently, and it's really starting to irritate me. 'Oh Alex, you don't know anything about ==-insert topic here-==' Oh, I don't? I sure know a lot more about things then some of the ignorant adults I've met. Why should my age be the factor that defines my intelligence? Just because I'm only thirteen, doesn't make me an idiot. Due to my age, people think that my opinions don't matter, and they just brush me off as some little kid. People need to see that as the years go by, future generations are going to be more intelligent. I have come up with a few explanations to this recent burst of maturity in my peers though. I suppose it could be because of global warming, but that's one of my crazy ideas. Another more reasonable idea is that we are being exposed to more mature topics and we need to grow up a little faster than the past generations. We've had to grow up with topics like abortion, the war in Iraq, 9/11, AIDS, and other events in mind, and that's forcing us to face the world as it is. The past generations lived a shielded, cushioned life, without any really 'major' things happening. For example, my brother grew up in the late 80's and 90's and he said that everything was pretty calm and the only thing that he had to worry about was getting good grades. Also, another reason is that children can get their hands on information a lot easier than they could before because of the internet. The internet allows you to view all the information you want with a simple click of a mouse. For example, if I wanted to know about AIDS, all I would have to do is go to Wikipedia and type in AIDS. People need to understand that we're not like the kids a few years back. We're beginning to develop ideas, opinions, and people need to get over the ideology that children know nothing about anything. This entry was posted on November 17, 2007 at 08:21 PM and is filed under Personal,.
